Following ten weeks of enabling works within occupied premises to form new facilities and a phased decant programme to free up elements of the main building, the main programme commenced.

The roof was stripped of existing fittings and redundant plant removed. A major structural installation was undertaken to accommodate new chiller and air handling units. A bespoke roof enclosure was formed through the concrete floor to facilitate installation of MRI scanner, whilst the first floor remained occupied. The roof was weathered and perimeter edging extended and upgraded. Six crane lifts over consecutive weekends were necessary to lift in the scanner and plant.

Following extensive strip out a completely new M&E installation was undertaken with new MRI control and scanner procedure rooms, consultation rooms and associated facilities. The fit out included services, commissioning with the Siemens team and upgrades to medical gas’s, alarms, ventilation, access and BMS controls.

In addition, a scheduled programme of works was necessary on the occupied medical records department on the ground floor. The refurbishment was undertaken around shifts and out of hours.

The works took place within fully operational hospital buildings. Furthermore, the works were carried out immediately adjacent to very busy hospital departments.

The MRI programme of the works was 26 weeks. This included granting Siemens access to the MRI scanner Room, tech equipment room and control room to carry out their installation of the MRI equipment and conduct all necessary testing and commissioning.
