Enhancing Services at the Westminster Public Mortuary: A Major Refurbishment Completed
April 2025
We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the refurbishment project at the Westminster Public Mortuary.
This crucial facility plays a significant role in providing a hygienic and respectful environment for the storage and examination of deceased individuals prior to burial or cremation. Recognising the need for modernisation and increased capacity, the refurbishment was designed to elevate both functionality and services.
Project Objectives
- To upgrade equipment and improve mechanical and electrical systems (M&E)
- To repair roof
- To install new surveillance and lighting systems for mortuary procedures.
- To address drainage issues and enhance overall facility conditions.
- To expand the capacity of the mortuary from 93 spaces to 146.
Project Details
Decontamination and Preparation
Before any refurbishment work commenced, all bodies were respectfully removed from the facility. The area underwent thorough decontamination to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for construction activities.
Drainage System Update
A critical aspect of the refurbishment was the modification of drainage layouts to ensure efficiency at each station. This involved breaking out the existing floor screed and relaying it to create appropriate slopes, facilitating effective drainage during mortuary operations.
Installation of New Equipment
The project included the installation of new body storage units (including both standard and bariatric options), specialised freezers and modern post-mortem tables. These upgrades were essential for accommodating a greater number of cases and improving service quality.
Refurbishment of Key Areas
Significant enhancements were made to the evidence room and forensics area, which included:
- New flooring
- Reinstallation of a comprehensive CCTV system for security and monitoring
- Installation of a new microphone system to facilitate communication during procedures
- Construction of new walls and doors to aid in the overall functionality and security of these crucial areas
Results
The successful completion of the refurbishment led to a significant increase in the mortuary’s capacity, expanding from 93 spaces to 146. The upgrades not only improved operational efficiency but also ensured compliance with contemporary standards for hygiene and safety in mortuary practices.
Conclusion
The Westminster Public Mortuary refurbishment project exemplifies a successful initiative to modernise essential public health facilities. Through careful planning, execution and thoughtful design, the project has enhanced the capacity and functionality of the mortuary, ensuring it can continue to serve the community effectively and respectfully in the years to come.
