Dame Kelly Holmes Opens Newly Refurbished Derek Mitchell Unit

May 2023

Following completion last month, the newly renovated Derek Mitchell Ward at Kings College Hospital has, this week, officially been opened by Col Dame Kelly Holmes MBE (mil)

The existing Derek Mitchell Unit was decanted to allow the upgrading and refurbishment of the ward to provide an overall better clinical experience with improved temperature control and lighting.

Following reconfiguration of the existing areas, our completed works now provide the Trust with a purpose-built chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant unit consisting of:

  • 14 beds (two isolation rooms, two teenage/young adult occupancy rooms and ten single bed rooms)
  • Clinical rooms
  • Modernised patient day room
  • Nurses’ station
  • Storage facilities

The rooms all contain new wall beds which will enable loved ones to stay and provide support.  The calming wall art and enhanced bedhead panelling makes the rooms less clinical and more comfortable.

Works also included the introduction of plant on the flat roof inside the existing enclosure to facilitate the required temperature control and an access facility was built to enable safe maintenance.
