New Linac Suite
Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust
Refurbishment and upgrade of the LINAC2 suite at the Royal Free to provide a new and modern environment which facilitated the installation of a new linear accelerator by the specialist Varian.
Works included the full strip-out and refit of the main Linac space and accompanying areas, as well as an upgrade of the existing infrastructure services to support the new M&E design.
The existing lead protection regime in the area as a whole was reviewed and supplemented as required to meet current criteria. We also installed new air handling and air conditioning systems to manage airflow and cooling.
A key element to the success of the project was the early engagement with Varian, so as to determine their precise requirements, programme and sequencing in relating to getting the kit onto site, the subsequent installation process and then the final testing and commissioning of the linear accelerator.
The Trust’s Linac Room 1 was located immediately adjacent to the site area and it was of paramount importance that this remained fully functional and undisturbed throughout the course of the project. Therefore noise, vibration, access, site boundaries and radiation protection lines were all considered when developing our project methodology.
