NPL Auditorium Upgrade: Elevating the Audio-Visual Experience

April 2025

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the Module 16 auditorium.

This case study focuses on the recent upgrade of the Module 16 auditorium, which aimed to enhance the audio-visual experience for both performers and audiences. The upgrade encompassed the installation of a new LED “videowall” screen, improved lighting, enhanced acoustics and the construction of a new equipment and controls booth.

Project Objectives

The primary objectives of the auditorium upgrade were to:

  • Modernise the audio-visual equipment to meet current technological standards.
  • Improve the overall acoustics within the auditorium for better sound quality.
  • Enhance user-friendliness for operators managing the audio-visual components during events.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and accessibility standards.

Scope of Works

The project involved several key components:

  • Installation of New LED Screens: High-definition screens were installed to provide clear visuals for presentations and performances.
  • Updated Lighting: State-of-the-art lighting systems were integrated to facilitate various event types, ensuring versatility and ambience.
  • Acoustic Upgrade: An analysis of the existing acoustics led to a comprehensive overhaul, focusing on sound clarity and reduction of echo.
  • Construction of New Control Booth: A new equipment and controls booth was built at the rear of the auditorium. This included the installation of all necessary AV and electrical services.
  • Acoustic Door Installation: To facilitate access while maintaining acoustic integrity, a new acoustic door was added to the existing acoustic wall.

Challenges

Throughout the project, several challenges were encountered:

  • Minimising Disruption: To avoid interfering with staff and visitors, the emergency exit was temporarily repurposed as the site entrance, with a secure area established to deter unauthorised access.
  • Tight Timeline: The project was under a strict schedule due to the upcoming 125th anniversary celebrations of the National Physics Laboratory.
  • Noise Control: Given the auditorium’s location above a reception area and adjacent to meeting rooms, a strict noise control policy was implemented, requiring daily communication with the Event Team to coordinate any noisy activities.

Outcome

The upgraded auditorium now boasts:

  • A significant improvement in sound quality, offering a more immersive experience for audiences.
  • Enhanced visual presentations due to high-definition screens and advanced lighting systems.
  • An operator-friendly environment with a strategically located controls booth, allowing for more efficient management during events.

Conclusion

The auditorium upgrade project has successfully met its objectives, providing a modernised venue that enhances both performance quality and audience enjoyment.
