Uxbridge Mortuary

Extension and internal refurbishment to existing mortuary, which continued to operate through our multiple-phased programme works.

Architect: Hunters
Quantity Surveyor: LB Hillingdon
Location: Uxbridge
Duration: 108 weeks

This project was for the construction of a new extension and refurbishment of the internal layout of the existing mortuary to increase its capacity.

Our delivery comprised a phased programme of works to ensure continued use of the mortuary as much as possible. Our programme strategy included executing the following phases:

Enabling Phase: Our activities focused on providing temporary hearse and body access throughout our construction programme. This included relocating existing chillers and removal of external windows, internal viewing screens and carpet. Moreover, we installed new temporary lockable doors and surfaces for hearse access.

Phase One (Northwestern Extension): We built a new extension to enhance the mortuary’s capacity and refurbished the existing staff changing block. Our robust submission of the piling design, a CDP item, was critical to ensure the timely execution of this phase.

Phase Two (Internal Remodelling): We internally refurbished existing areas to provide a new post-mortem room. Works in this phase required the installation of robust segregation, security and safety controls to ensure the mortuary staff could continue to work their standard daily routine.

Phase Three (Southeastern Extension): We constructed another extension to provide new training areas for staff, as well as internally refurbishing the main entrance, viewing areas and staff offices.

We were mindful of the surrounding stakeholders and implemented numerous mitigations. This included implementing strict noise, dust, and vibration controls to be considerate of mourners visiting the adjacent LB Hillingdon Cemetery. We also had a Traffic Management Plan in place to safeguard the neighbouring Brunel University London campus and sports park.
