About This Education Project

The Windmill Education Centre is a new single storey, timber frame building that serves as both an educational and visitor centre. It is a flexible space capable of hosting workshops, classes and other events. Local businesses can also book it for meetings and seminars.

The centre features a training kitchen where cookery classes can take place, using the flour produced by the Brixton Windmill. Additionally, it has a grain store, cycle parking, and WCs.

The design of the Windmill Education Centre was developed to be in keeping with the historic Grade II listed Brixton Windmill located next to it. Due to the significance of the Windmill, the client team, architect, local stakeholders and heritage groups were closely consulted throughout the build to protect it from the risks of an adjacent construction site.

As the park is open to the public, we gave considerable thought to the considerate construction of the building. A clear logistics and traffic management plan was put in place to maintain safety and suitably segregate the public. The plan was developed in the logistics and risks workshops with the client team during the preconstruction stage. This ensured that key tasks such as delivery of concrete supplies and other large or sensitive loads could be accommodated without disruption to the public’s access to or from the park, while ensuring safety around the area.

Following the pre-start workshops with the client, we also informed the local public about our works. Regular construction phase newsletters were provided to offer logistical information.
