Complex refurbishment of training laboratories, carried out as a phased project to enable continued use of facilities.

Quantity Surveyor: Babcock International

Duration: 24 weeks

About This Research and Development Project

This refurbishment project took place at an M.O.D site, with the aim of improving the training facilities, laboratories and offices. The project was divided into two phases, both of which involved complex refurbishment work.

Phase one included the extension of an existing laboratory, which required the demolition of existing partitions to create a larger floor area. New structural steel supports were installed to maintain the integrity of the building. The area was then refurbished and equipped with new laboratory equipment and M&E systems.

In phase two, the three existing laboratories were converted into office spaces. This involved a range of works, including soft strip, demolition, drainage, mechanical and electrical works, painting and decorating. A new independent plant room was also developed during this phase.

To ensure a safe and effective decant/recant strategy, end users were moved to the new area once phase one was completed. Strong collaboration, planning and coordination with the client were essential to ensure the strategy was timed effectively and safely provided.

Given the highly sensitive nature of the site, we had to comply comprehensively with the strict M.O.D access protocols. This included ensuring all personnel passed a formal vetting procedure before being admitted onto the site.
