FOGG BUILDING
Upgrading of laboratory facilities across six floors of the Fogg Building on the QMUL Mile End Campus. Works included the refurbishment and remodelling of the existing floors into teaching laboratory and offices; including student reception/waiting area, toilets and staff kitchen area.
The works were carried out whilst the building was still in use. To safeguard the ongoing research and teaching facilities, we understood our responsibility to provide a logistics plan and phased programme that was targeted to minimise any potential disruption.
‘Live’ work segregated from the in-use facilities and, when necessary, students were decanted into suitable research and learning areas. This ensured their safety, whilst continuing to provide them with a tranquil setting in which to learn.
JOHN VANE SCIENCE CENTRE
This scheme was for the refurbishment of two under-used areas, redeveloped into one, to create a new imaging suite used to undertake cancer research.
The project started with the creation of a secure space, introducing new security doors and access system. We also had to install two partitions in the existing doorways, sealed to make them dust proof, as the adjacent room was an occupied laboratory with a scanner that required clean facilities at all times.
This was a logistically challenging project as it required working in a ‘live’ building that was often undertaking experiments during the day. We worked closely with the team at QMUL to understand their working patterns and were able to minimise noisy works when key experiments and scanning were taking place.
During 2010 Logan Construction had previously completed a £3.3m reconfiguration and refurbishment project at the John Vane Science Centre to form new laboratories, cell culture rooms, hot labs and associated write-up areas, together with offices, meeting rooms and additional seminar rooms.
